Looking at the characteristics of NHW (Neighbourhood Watch) as represented by many of EUNWA’s members, the following general remarks can be made:
- Neighbourhood watch is a specific form of crime prevention based on the personal involvement of private citizens cooperating among themselves and with the police in order to achieve safer living.
- The term “neighbourhood watch” is a very general term comprising many different kinds of activities which are performed in the different countries.
- In most of the countries represented in the EUNWA network, NW groups are self-organized and cooperate closely with local authorities and communal institutions. Very often they are also supported by organizational and financial aid from public funds. In such countries, NW has a positive image and also benefits from active involvement of the population realizing that helping each other is the same as helping oneself.
